Welcome to Open Gardens Victoria
Open Gardens Victoria Inc is a not-for-profit organisation formed to continue the long tradition of opening private gardens throughout Victoria.
Victoria has a very proud horticultural and garden design history. Australia's first open garden program was launched here in 1987, and over the years the much-loved scheme has proven irresistible to garden lovers.
Open Gardens Victoria continues to provide the opportunity to visit wonderful gardens in this state, building on the legacy handed down by Open Gardens Australia following its closure at the end of June 2015.
Since Open Gardens Victoria was formed and launched in July 2015, we have enjoyed attendance at open gardens and events that were more than could have been expected. We had fantastic Autumn and Spring seasons in 2016 and our Summer/Autumn calendar is full of so many things to do, see and experience!
A Taste of our First Seasons
There have been so many highlights in our first year and a half. Some 10,600 visitors attended openings in our first season, demostrating the community's continued dedication to visiting gardens in 'the Garden State'.
Crowds flocked to OGV's launch at Musk Cottage at the end of September 2015, and visitors have kept coming in large numbers ever since! Many people have told us they are so pleased that the open gardens program has been reincarnated in Victoria.
There have been many wonderful open gardens and events.
In 2015, this included opera in the wonderful Astolat garden in Camberwell, whimsical fairies in the Atkins garden in Fitzroy, the combination of sustainable and traditional design in the beautiful Yarra Valley setting of Lubra Bend, and crowds who turned up to Anne Vale’s Gippsland garden in the rain!
In 2016's Spring season, this has included gardens from bush settings to manicured suburban gardens - an extraordinary variety - and what is even more pleasing is that they've all attracted large numbers of visitors and great feedback. Some openings have felt like a garden party, others have provided insights into plant selection for local conditions, and many have given garden lovers great and inspiring ideas.
OGV continues to gain momentum amongst garden lovers, professionals, young and old! From eight gardens opening in our inaugural Spring season in 2015, we will be offering over 20 gardens and events in the 2017 Summer and Autumn calendar.
It's Not Just Gardens
From the outset, OGV has been committed to offering a program of events each season. Several Coach Tours have been a sellout. We have also offered (and will continue to do so) workshops on productive gardening, composting and espaliering, as well as a forthcoming guided tour of some of the Mornington Peninsula's sculpture gardens. Feedback has been enthusiastic and a program of workshops is being planned for the coming season. Details will be posted on our website at www.opengardensvictoria.org.au.
The Annual Program
Each season OGV offers a program of inspirational gardens encompassing the entire range from designer to owner grown and maintained, huge to tiny, rural to metropolitan and everything in between! The program features a mix of gardens that have delighted visitors in the past along with a selection of wonderful new ones.
The Spring season of 2016-17 season has been hugely well-attended, encompassing a wide variety of gardens, locations and experiences. For the Summer and Autumn 2017 season, there will be many gardens opening and events. All the details are online, with specific details as each opening and event is confirmed.
Many garden owners have expressed an interest in opening their gardens with OGV.
Garden entrance fees for a general opening are currently $8, and, being a volunteer-run organisation, we are able to provide a generous 50/50 division of gate entrance fees. Many garden owners choose to donate their share to a chosen charity. As a not-for-profit organisation, OGV uses much of its surplus to support horticultural causes.
If you are interested in opening your garden, please contact us at: email@example.com
OGV is fortunate that many experienced selectors who were previously at Open Gardens Australia are still on board with us!
Selectors play a crucial role in identifying inspiring gardens, maintaining links with garden owners, supporting them and engaging in significant forward planning for the program of openings. If you are interested in becoming a selector, please contact us at:
Friends of Open Gardens
The OGV Friends group offers garden lovers members-only activities and a two-for-one entry to one general garden opening of their choice.
Many enthusiastic visitors have chosen to support OGV by becoming Friends – there are more than 70 of you now! Whether it has been manning the gates, helping out at the MIFGS marquee or addressing envelopes, you have been fantastic! Events each year include a Friends Christmas picnic and a Friends Only opening.
Join a Sub-committee, assist owners on the gate, welcome garden visitors or help out in the carpark – there are many opportunities to volunteer. Volunteers at openings receive free entry and the opportunity to enjoy a garden at leisure outside rostered shift times.
Whether you are a garden owner, selector, visitor or volunteer, we encourage you to get involved with OGV. You can contact us with suggestions or queries at: firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone on 0472 997 880.
