Welcome to Open Gardens Victoria Inc
Open Gardens Victoria Inc is a not-for-profit organisation formed to continue the long tradition of opening private gardens throughout Victoria.
Victoria has a proud horticultural history - Australia's first open garden program was launched here in 1987 and over the years the much-loved scheme has proven irresistible to garden lovers. Open Gardens Victoria continues to provide the opportunity to visit wonderful gardens in this State, building on the legacy handed down by Open Gardens Australia following its closure at the end of June 2015.
It is hard to believe that just over one year has passed since Open Gardens Victoria was formed and we are now gearing up for the launch of the 2016/17 season at Attila and Michele Kapitany’s fascinating succulent garden at Narre Warren North on the weekend of 27 and 28 August.
A Taste of our First Season
There have been so many highlights in our first year.
Crowds flocked to our launch at Musk Cottage at the end of September 2015 and visitors have kept coming in large numbers ever since! So many have told us they are very grateful the open gardens program has been reincarnated in Victoria.
There has been opera in the wonderful Astolat garden in Camberwell, whimsical fairies in the Atkins garden in Fitzroy, the combination of sustainable and traditional design in the beautiful Yarra Valley setting of Lubra Bend and the crowds who turned up to Anne Vale’s Gippsland garden in the rain!
Some 10,600 visitors attended openings in our first season, making for an amazing average of 700 visitors per opening.
Month by month OGV is finding its feet and the program of openings and events is gaining momentum. From eight gardens opening in our inaugural spring season we will be offering over 20 gardens in the 2016/17 spring season.
It's Not Just Gardens
From the outset OGV has been committed to offering a program of events each season. The Mornington Peninsula Coach Tour in March was a sellout and a great success despite taking place on the only rainy day since Christmas! We have also offered workshops on productive gardening, composting and espaliering. Feedback has been enthusiastic and a program of workshops is being planned for the coming season. Details will be posted on our website at www.opengardensvictoria.org.au . The first event is a coach tour of Macedon gardens on 1 September.
The Annual Program
Each season OGV offers a program of inspirational gardens encompassing the entire range from designer to owner-grown and maintained, huge to tiny, rural to metropolitan and everything in between! The program features a mix of gardens that have delighted visitors in the past along with a selection of wonderful new ones.
The 2016-17 season is looking very exciting, with a huge variety of gardens and locations being scheduled. There will be two gardens opening most weekends from late August to December. We will be putting details online as each opening is confirmed. You will find many gardens already there.
Many garden owners have expressed an interest in opening their gardens for OGV. OGV aims to provide support to owners and to return more funds to garden owners and/or their chosen charities. Garden entrance fees for a general opening are currently $8 and as a volunteer-run organisation, we are able to provide a generous 50/50 division of gate entrance fees.
If you are interested in opening your garden, please contact us at: firstname.lastname@example.org
OGV is fortunate that many experienced selectors have agreed to continue with the new organisation. Selectors play a crucial role in identifying inspiring gardens, maintaining links with garden owners, supporting them and engaging in significant forward planning for the program of openings. If you are interested in becoming a selector, please contact us at:
Friends of Open Gardens
The OGV Friends group offers garden lovers members-only activities and a two-for-one entry to one general garden opening of their choice.
Many enthusiastic visitors have chosen to support OGV by becoming Friends – there are more than 60 of you now! Whether it has been manning the gates, helping out at the MIFGS marquee or addressing envelopes, you have been fantastic! Events in the first season included a Friends Christmas picnic and a ‘Plant Swap meet’.
Visit the Friends tab to find out more about how to become an annual member or to support OGV as a Foundation Friend.
Join a sub-committee, assist owners on the gate, welcome garden visitors or help out in the carpark - there are many opportunities to volunteer. Volunteers at openings receive free entry and the opportunity to enjoy a garden at leisure outside rostered shift times.
Whether you are a garden owner, selector, visitor or volunteer, we encourage you to get involved with OGV. You can contact us with suggestions or queries at: email@example.com
