Buttenshaw Farm is an organic and permaculture based micro-seed farm and productive garden, that encourages all beneficial insects and systems working in harmony. There are diverse flower plantings interspersed between the many productive beds, native bees (including blue banded bees), European honey bees and butterflies.

Since 2015 the owners have adapted and evolved the garden to include ponds, a greenhouse and a delightful gazebo to make this a space of respite and production. The household seeks to reduce their environmental impact by embracing nature, reducing waste and utilising scraps in the garden system.

The productive part of the garden features fruit and nut trees, heirloom vegetables (part of their seed and seedling business) and chickens. What isn't eaten right away is preserved to be consumed over the winter months. Despite the the challenges of a sloped site, the Buttenshaws have created a productive oasis at the base of the Dandenongs. There is something to inspire everyone in this garden.

We last opened this garden in 2019 and are excited to open it again!

Some of her proceeds from this garden opening will be donated to the Lilydale SES.

Please note:

  • The closest toilets are at the Montrose Reserve and civic centre and the local library.
  • There is limited parking on Heathfield and Sheffield Rd. We suggest to car pool if you plan to visit with multiple people, or park on Mount Dandenong-Tourist Rd and walk from there.
  • There will be March flies at this time of year so we recommend to wear light loose clothing.

Buttenshaw Farm is located on the lands of the Wurundjeri people. Open Gardens Victoria wish to acknowledge the Traditional custodians of this land and we pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
