Ben and Kerrie Brooker have created a perennial garden around their 100 year old cottage known locally as "The Farm".
With a mix of beautiful native and exotic trees, some dating 135 years, they use their garden to experiment with their range of rare plant stock they grow from imported seed and sell under the banner of Treasured Perennials Nursery, a common sight at the plant fairs across Victoria.
While some beds in this garden are in their early stages, it is a lovely opportunity to see how perennials can be used to great effect, while other parts of the garden are more mature. Many rare perennials, shrubs and bulbs are planted throughout the colour co-ordinated garden as well as David Austin roses.
The 6 acre property has a small orchard and a wonderful productive vegetable garden sits behind the home, providing food year round.
Ben and Kerrie practice regenerative horticulture to improve soil health. On both days there will be guided tours at 11.30 & 2pm, where Ben will speak on the evolution of the garden & will finish with a soil improvement demonstration under the row of pine trees, at the back of the property.
This is a young garden and while some areas are mature, others are being developed. We feel it is inspiring for visitors to see a garden evolving and we hope you are inspired by your visit.
There will be a vast array of rare and unusual perennials, shrubs and bulbs for sale. A coffee van will sell sweet and savory treats and there'll be a portaloo onsite and The Drouin Lions Club will be running a BBQ over the weekend and some of the proceeds from the opening will also be donated to them.
Please note: there is limited parking in the paddock (weather dependent). Parking is also available on Fairway Drive which is a 200m walk to the garden along McGlone Rd. There is NO parking on McGlone Road at all and NO coach Parking.
Wensley Farm is also opening nearby over this same weekend.
Open Gardens Victoria wish to acknowledge the Traditional custodians of this land and we pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
