The Fernery at Rippon Lea Estate, Elsternwick
Video - Rippon Lea Fernery
Take a virtual peek at the spectacular fernery at Rippon Lea with OGV sub-committee member, Kate Catterall.
Rippon Lea Estate was built in 1868 for Sir Frederick Sargood and his family. The arched fernery structure is built from cast iron and is one of the largest and last known 19th century ferneries in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere.
It houses some 200 rare and native ferns and is wonderfully cool on a summers day. This peaceful oasis is well worth visiting as a slice of history, horticulture and a fantastic place for kids to explore.
