This unique apartment building complex in East Melbourne – located between two renowned streets and within walking distance of four of Melbourne city’s most famous public gardens – comprises 144 apartments with a 5,984 square metre footprint; including two superb garden courtyards, each of which is 1,600 square metres.

The eclectic garden is designed around a series of courtyards with plantings that meet the challenges of varied light and shade. An overall cohesion is created through the use of quirky topiary, clipped hedges and cloud pruning.

The focus of the garden areas is on foliage, with seasonal interest and colour provided by pots amongst the hedges and on balconies.

Each garden area is built on top of the buildings carpark so this is technically a roof garden. There's a shallow soil structure: approximately 100- 300mm with poor drainage. The garden is shaded for extended periods from the apartment buildings that surround it. Most areas receiving an average of 2.5 hours of sun per day.

The garden is designed to be viewed from above and provide 365 days of viewing pleasure through continual seasonal interest.

Please note: the nearest toilets are in the Fitzroy Gardens. Some of the proceeds from this opening will be donated to the CFA.

The Victorian & Albert Town Residence is located on the lands of the Wurundjeri people. Open Gardens Victoria wish to acknowledge the Traditional custodians of this land and we pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

Extra activities in the area:

  • Treasury and Fitzroy gardens
  • Cafes in East Melbourne
  • Interesting shops and cafes along Smith, Gertrude and Brunswick Streets.
