Since moving into their five-acre property six years ago, garden owners Chris and Brian, have worked tirelessly to change an old poultry farm into a blank canvas, laying the groundwork for creating their own piece of paradise.
They transformed the once overgrown creek area (with the support of a Melbourne Water Grant) into an oasis for waterbirds, using indigenous plantings suitable for the area which include: Tall Sedge, Dianella, Poa, Carex appressa, Cassinia, Juncus procerus Lomandra, Chrysocephalum, Wirilda and Swamp paperbarks.
A copse of Blackwoods stand on the far side of the dam and Koala food trees such as Peppermint, Coastal Manna and Swamp gums line the walking path that curves along the creek bed.
There is a citrus orchard at the back of the house leading to a large productive vegetable garden full of seasonal plants. Behind the chicken pen there are two different hothouses - one for growing many different tropical fruiting plants including bananas, pineapples, mangos, guavas and the occasional tomato, and the other is used for growing seedlings to be planted out.
Behind the hothouses you will find an amazing 14 by 30 metre covered-in orchard area with an espalier system housing close to 30 different varieties of fruit trees as well as another built up area for growing crops.
There will be a coffee van and there are places to sit and relax if you want to bring your own picnic. There will also be toilets on-site.
Some of the proceeds of this weekend will be donated to Very Special Kids.
Tahree is located on the lands of the BuBoon Wurrung/Bunurong People of the Kulin Nation. Open Gardens Victoria wish to acknowledge the Traditional custodians of this land and we pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
