In the five years since the house was completed and the garden begun, Scotsman’s Hill has transformed into an oasis.  The garden has been developed on the site of an old bluestone quarry on the side of a hill, so the site is steep. Banks have been managed via a number of stone walls alongside the paths. All the stones used in the walls were dug up as the garden was developed, during which the excavations exposed some large rocks which are judiciously placed around the site

Although this is a young garden there are a few large trees, including eucalypts and European trees retained by the owners when the site was cleared. The garden winds down the hill and is filled with plants that are grown in ‘rivers’ down the slope, all of which have been selected for their suitability to each location and aspect. Fruit trees are scattered through the garden terraces.

The flat area surrounding the house has a green lawn at the front which sets off the lovely views to Mt Macedon over the Kyneton township and adjoining race course. At the rear of the property there are raised vegetables gardens adjoining the back deck.

The lane at the bottom of the hill is lined by large old elms which colour beautifully in autumn. Visitors can walk up this lane to Brocklebank, next door.

Other garden openings in Kyneton this weekend are:

  • The Wedgewoods, 88 Wedge Street
  • Brocklebank, 12 Brocklebank Drive

Garden notes are written by the garden owners to describe their garden.
