Rag Doll Seed Germination
By Jane Byrne – Kids’ Corner Contributor
This method is a fun and easy way of germination seeds. It’s good to try something new!
When germinating seeds with children it’s a good idea to use large seeds as they give great results, even though they may take a little longer to germinate.
If you use pumpkin or bean seeds it’s best to soak them overnight enabling the seeds to germinate quicker. Don’t over soak as it can damage the seed and they can start to ferment. So let’s get started!
- Using a piece of paper towel, place a couple of your seeds at the bottom third of the paper towel.
- Fold up the one third of towel at the bottom, covering the seeds.
- Roll the paper towel up vertically, gently, not too firmly, as you need to allow space for your seeds to sprout towards the top opening.
- Wet the paper towel, but remember to squeeze out the excess water.
- Repeat process with more seeds and more paper towel.
- Place the rolled up paper towels into a plastic bag and store in a warm space for several days.
- Voila! It worked!
I recently put some pumpkin seeds into propagation soil and it took them four weeks to germinate as it was so cold in the house. Patience is the key, whichever way you choose for germination.
Have fun with this method of seed germination. It’s different!
