Keith and Clare's suburban garden is built with the aim of providing the couple with as much of their annual fruit, vegetable and herb needs as possible. In their 80 square metre block they are establishing plums, limes, apricots, strawberries, pomegranate and apples, along with new forays into kiwi fruit, blueberries, mandarins and oranges. In terms of vegetables, it's anything and everything, but tried and tested favourites include tomatoes, potatoes, silverbeet, kale, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, capsicum, broad beans, zucchini, rhubarb, snow peas, green beans and bok choy.
With a design-on-the-fly approach to transforming their garden from a patch of grass to an edible landscape, areas of the garden have undergone numerous iteration as errors were realised and new ideas were realised. Geometry plays a central role in the design of the garden – curved saw tooth key-hole garden beds, a meandering brick path, metal archways, circular steel barrels and rectangular wooden raised beds combine to create a complementary, but sometimes challenging, interplay between form and function.
Please note: This garden is not wheelchair or pram accessible.
