Brookdale Farm’ is a garden on 0.9 hectares.
John and Michelle Rayner have developed the garden over the last twenty years, although some sections, particularly many trees, date back to the early 20th century.
The garden has a focus on plants, particularly flowers and foliage materials but uses recycled, reused and repurposed materials for display and function throughout. The main sections in the garden include mixed borders, succulent border, rockery plantings, terraces, the wildwood, citrus block, berry patch, espaliers and kitchen garden.
Planting design is focussed on long seasonal interest, through colour, texture and form, in the context of lowish maintenance. The only section of the garden regularly irrigated is the kitchen garden while sawdust and gravel pathways are used to connect different sections.
Main highlights include:
- Late summer flowering perennials, wonderful use of foliage contrasts, and pollarding/coppicing techniques
- Large productive vegetable garden, and an excellent example of a espaliered fruit orchard
- Old outbuildings and upcycled pieces used to add character to the garden
The garden owners takings from this opening will be donated to The Global Gardens of Peace.
Extra activities in the area:
- Ferny Creek Horticultural Autumn Show
- Puffing Billy
- Emerald Lake Park
- Nobelius Heritage Park
- Emerald Township
