The majority of plantings at Birregurra Garden have been planted by a self-confessed gardening newcomer who is a master at combining colour, texture, form and the right environment to create a beautiful garden.

The layout on this flat 1 acre block beside a Federation cottage, is a series of circles and an ellipse to create various sized garden rooms. These are all linked by short paths of mulch or lawn corridors.

The first circle of lawn was created on the axis of the kitchen and family room of the house. The second circle is at the front of the block where there are some established trees. The third circle surrounds existing fruit trees and is followed by another circle which is the rose arbour lawn. This links with an eclipse which has a mix of native plants and conifers. Here you will find a mound built to protect the garden from future floods from the nearby creek. Separate to this is the pool lawn which is surrounded by flowering perennials.

The diverse plant selection is based on plant form and colour, along with leaf size and shape. “I planted what I liked! It was all quite experimental with my initial goal being to plant as many evergreens as possible to form the walls of the garden rooms”, says the garden owner.

Many interesting and unusual plants can be found in this densely planted country town garden.

Cottage Farm Perennial Nursery will be on site at this opening.

Birregurra Cottage is located on the lands of the Eastern Maar People. Open Gardens Victoria wish to acknowledge the Traditional custodians of this land and we pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
