'Big Hill' located at Christmas Hills in the Yarra Valley is a wonderful garden set on 5 hectares of bushland. There's a beautiful synergy between home, garden and natural surrounds. The garden is made up of approximately 60 per cent native plants, 20 per cent local indigenous species and 20 per cent exotics. The flat garden which sits on a hill covers around 1 hectare; the surrounding bush is downhill on all sides.
The garden is made up of a number of garden rooms all unique in their outlook and plant palette, the spaces linked by the use of similar hard landscaping materials - predominantly basalt boulders, recycled timbers and iron. Most spaces contain a water feature or sculptural piece, with clever plant placement adding interest and definition. The garden room space next to the house is open and designed to show off the spectacular view of the Yarra Ranges. It includes a natural pool which encourages fauna and mirrors the surrounds.
