Marg and Warwick Hutchins’ Point Lonsdale Garden invites the visitor on a journey through several designated garden rooms, each with its own mood and atmosphere. This most recent design of the Winterly Road garden was undertaken by the owners and Eckersley Garden Architecture in 2018.
Previously the garden had been owned by an avid plant collector, who made a hobby of visiting nurseries and bringing home unusual species. Marg and Warwick’s vision for the garden was to maintain these many wonderful species while evolving the garden into a space for enjoying time with family and friends.
From the street, the garden is sympathetic to its coastal environment, using a mixture of moonahs and tea tree, and borrows landscape from the beachy nature strip. Additionally, the decided coastal feel of the front garden sets up a wonderful surprise for visitors as they round into the lawn area which has an altogether different feel.
Once inside, the garden reveals itself to be a true natural haven. The various spaces are densely layered and overflow with a wonderful variety of plant species, including natives and exotics and many unusual varieties.
The five distinct areas are:
● Coastal streetscape
● A lawn surrounded by the original collectors garden
● The pool and entertaining space
● A potager garden for vegetables and herbs
● A native garden in the rear that was overlooked by the home’s bedrooms
Typical of EGA gardens, a walk through Marg and Warwick’s garden is like undertaking a journey. The garden is textural with a mix of leaf forms, combined with strap-leaved grasses and groundcovers, layered densely against the many existing trees.
One of landscape designer Scott Leung’s favourites of the existing trees was a fruiting fig tree that had been espaliered against the original home. By the time Marg and Warwick’’s family moved in, the tree had grown so large that it could be free standing. It’s a magnificent specimen.
The landscape designer, Scott Leung, and gardener will be present for the opening.
Some of the proceeds for this opening will be donated to Cottage by the Sea - a children's charity.
Point Lonsdale Garden is located on the lands of the Wadawurrung People. Open Gardens Victoria wish to acknowledge the Traditional custodians of this land and we pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
