When landscape designer Stephen Read was first approached to create the Highett garden, he was greeted by a blank canvas and the task of designing a garden to surround a brand-new house on a cleared block.

Learn how Stephen went about designing a lush, productive and beautiful urban garden from scratch. During the talk Stephen will explain how to use the architecture of the house as well as the borrowed landscape to create a garden that feels connected to the home and the people within it.

Have you ever wondered:

  • How to hide a water tank?
  • How to work out the best position for a vegetable garden?
  • Why lawn is sometimes a waste of space?

These questions and more will be answered in this informative talk.

Admire the sweeping curve of the timber bollard ‘fence’ out the front, the clever narrow garden space along the side, the paved entertaining shelter along with fruit trees, herbs, vegetables, olive trees and mystical grasses.

This garden shows it’s possible to create a beautiful balanced garden without symmetry or lawn. Come and collect ideas.
