Red Gums is an informal garden of exclusively Australian plants (over 150 different types), with open areas to complement the planted areas and rock work – balancing mass and void. There is an upper story of trees, with a middle story of smaller trees and medium size shrubs, and a lower story of ground covers and small shrubs. There are informal tracks, which wind through the trees so that one can get the feeling of the ‘bush’.

The planting selection harmonises the textures, colours and structures of the plants so that the overall impression is one of being pleasing to the eye. There are areas of interest with the large stand of remnant red gums, a very old Moreton Bay Fig tree, approximately 140 years old, and concentrations of casuarinas, acacias, eucalypts and grasses.

The garden is peaceful, soothing for the soul and a pleasure to spend time in. Most importantly, the garden complements the beautiful old red gums.

Sam Cox designed this garden and will be speaking on both days. Times to be advised.

Red Gums is located on the lands of the Wadawurrung People. Open Gardens Victoria wish to acknowledge the Traditional custodians of this land and we pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

Extra activities in the area:

  • The Bellarine Peninsula has a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, wineries, shopping areas, nature trails and historical sites
