Karen’s garden has a formal entrance but the ‘surprise’ happens through a side gate which opens into a large tranquil garden space hidden behind a high fence.
This peaceful side garden has beautiful mature trees including Ginkgo, Jacaranda and Prunus subhirtella ‘Pendula’ that offer gentle shade offset by colourful and carefully-designed planting underneath.
A large ‘freeform’ pond is a feature of this garden, as well as the gazebo amidst the greenery. Discrete sculptures enhance the peaceful feeling of the water and water plants.
The large central lawn area gives a sense of expansiveness which is not usual in many suburban gardens, and the deep garden beds flow around this area in an informal way.
On the other side of the house there is a skilful planting of Mediterranean plants in the elevated beds beside the driveway and paths, while a number of vegie boxes supply the house with summer vegetables and herbs.
Other activities and places of interest in the local area include:
- Brighton Beach and beach walks (including famous bathing boxes)
- North Point Café
- Middle Brighton Baths and Pier
- Church Street shops
- Melbourne Bayside Cycling Trail
- St Kilda Botanic Gardens
