Situated in the historic town of Blackwood this undulating one hectare garden is framed by a backdrop of the Wombat State Forest. It features a wide variety of trees, including a large Golden Ash which, along with maples, ornamental pears and pin oaks, provides spectacular autumn colour. There is also a number of trees of significant age on the property including two cedars, a Blackwood, and an Irish Strawberry with a magnificent canopy. The property has an extensive range of shrubs, perennials, bulbs and a rose garden.
Visitors can wander down paths to a small bridge which crosses a stone-lined creek, landscaped to run down to an ornamental pond. Sculpture, found objects and various pieces of garden art are scattered throughout.
The owner’s home, built in 1861, was formerly a bank and buildings to the rear of the house create a replica of an 1860s streetscape – including a wheelwright, a blacksmith and a house of somewhat dubious repute – now used as a garden shed!
Please note that antiques, second-hand books (including gardening books) and metal garden art will be available for sale at the garden opening.
Proceeds from the open garden will be donated to Blackwood Outdoor Specialist School.
